All About Haematology
Doctors or physicians that are specialized in hematology are haematologists whose practise under haematology includes the overall care and treatment of blood diseases and disorders.
Blood is one important element of our body that brings nutrients and oxygen to all the parts of the body. By doing so, blood helps all the organs to work properly. If there’s any disease or disorder that affects the blood or its elements, it can also affect other organs as well.
The Department of Haematology at any hospital involves the treatment of blood disease that includes all the blood components like haemoglobin, bone marrow, blood cells, blood proteins, platelets, spleen, blood vessels, etc. Haematologists also involve in various other things like researches, treatments, therapies, and procedures.
To diagnose a blood disorder, a haematologist performs a variety of tests that include Complete blood count (CBC), Prothrombin time (PT), Partial thromboplastin time (PTT), Bone marrow biopsy, International normalized ratio (INR), etc. All these tests help a haematologist to diagnose or examine a particular blood disease and decide a specific treatment to it.
Blood Disorders
- 1. Sepsis - It is a condition in which there is an infection in the blood. When the immune system tries to fight with this infection, it releases a chemical that causes various other problems. One such problem is the inflammation in the whole body. As sepsis is a blood infection, a patient needs to visit a haematologist for treatment.
- 2. Hemophilia - It is a serious blood problem in which the clotting factors in the blood reduces resulting in the inability of the blood clotting. So when this happens, a wound or an injury doesn’t heal on its own because the blood doesn’t clot and as a result, there is excessive bleeding. There are different types of Hemophilia in people and each one has different symptoms and treatments.
- 3. Leukemia - It is a kind of cancer that affects the blood cells. As there are red blood cells and white blood cells, leukemia is generally said to be the cancer of white blood cells. There are various risk factors of Leukemia like smoking, genetic disorder, high exposure to radiation, etc. Once you experience its symptoms, your doctor may recommend you to visit a haematologist for better diagnosis and treatment.
- 4. Anemia - It is a very common blood condition mainly found in women. Anemia refers to a condition where the body has a low number of healthy red blood cells. As RBC carries oxygen, so a reduced number of them indicate less oxygen in the blood. Anemia is measured by a protein present in RBC which is hemoglobin. This condition is mainly treated with changes in the diet.
- 5. Lymphoma - It is a condition in which there is cancer in the lymph nodes or vessels. The lymph fluid carries infection-fighting WBC with the help of lymph series. Now, when there is cancer in some lymph cells or lymph system, it is called Lymphoma. There can be different risk factors and causes of Lymphoma according to which its treatment is done.
