Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is five-stage kidney disease. Here in the first stage, you experience mild pain, but the condition turns into complete kidney failure in the fifth stage. However, the stages differ in how well your kidney is functioning. In the early stages, your kidney can filter blood. But, in a later stage, the kidney finds it hard to eliminate waste and often stops working.
5 Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
The doctor measures how well the kidney can filter waste by estimating the glomerular filtration rate or eGFR. Moreover, the measures the number of creatinine, a waste product in your blood, to find out your eGFR. The stages of kidney based on eGFR number are:
- Stage 1 of CKD
Stage one of CKD, you have an eGFR of ninety or greater. During this stage, you have the mild condition; it is adjustable and easily adaptable. Thus, the kidney can perform almost 90 percent of its work or better. At this stage, you can only discover CKD if you have a routine urine or blood test.
Or you are having a blood or urine test for diabetes or blood pressure check. Furthermore, there is typically no symptom of CKD at this stage.
- Stage 2 of CKD
In stage two of CKD, you have an eGFR ranging from 60 to 89. Mostly the kidney works fine in this stage, although you may experience other signs of kidney damage. Thus the signs that you can notice in this stage is the protein in your pee or urine or physical injury to your kidney. More symptoms are:
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Sleep issues
- Itching
- Loss of eating urge
- Stage 3 of CKD
Stage three of kidney failure contains two parts stage 3A and stage 3B. In stage 3A, your eGFR ranges from 45 to 56 percent, whereas, in stage 3B, it ranges from 30 to 44 percent. At this stage, your kidneys are not able to filter waste, fluids, and toxins. As a result, these waste materials are getting stored in your body. Furthermore, the symptoms that you may follow are:
- Weakness
- Back pain
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Sleep disturbance
- Swelling of feet and hands
- Persistent itching
- Stage 4 of CKD
Stage 4 is the kidney failure condition, which has now become somewhat severe. Your eGFR ranges from 15 to 29 percent. Thus your body is storing more and more toxins, fluid, and waste. It is high time to take action to treat your problem. According to some studies, many people are not aware they have kidney problems after reaching this stage.
- Stage 5 of CKD
In this stage, your eGFR ranges less than 15 percent. In some conditions, you will experience complete kidney failure. It is also known as end-stage renal disease. In this stage, the stocked up toxins can cause life-threatening diseases.
Conclusion
The early stages of kidney failure are moderate and easily adaptable, so it is essential to go for regular checkups. However, if you experience symptoms, it would be best to consult a doctor.
